Instagram warmup

active active deadline none last tended 2026-05-27

Bring an Instagram account from cold to consistently posting in a chosen niche, without algorithmic suppression, by warming the account over ~4 weeks and locking in a sustainable production system.

Goal

By end of week 4: account is warm (no shadow-banning signals), niche is locked, profile is fully optimized, and a weekly production rhythm is running on its own (≥3 Reels/week + daily stories for 14 consecutive days).

Concrete success markers:

  • 4 weeks of uninterrupted posting cadence
  • ≥1 Reel that breaks past follower count in reach (signal that the algorithm is distributing)
  • A batch-recording system that takes ≤3 hours/week to produce a week of content

Why

I want to actually ship content, not just consume creator-economy theory. The warmup project gives the account a structured runway so I don’t burn it on day 1 with sloppy posts, and the niche-selection phase forces me to commit instead of drifting between topics. This is the production arm of content.

Status

2026-05-27 — Day 0. No niche locked. No warming started. Need to: (a) decide niche by end of week 1, (b) start the warm protocol immediately in parallel since profile optimization + organic engagement don’t require a niche to begin.

The 4-week warmup protocol

Week 1 — Profile + signal-seeding (NO posting)

  • Fully complete profile: name field with searchable keywords, bio with clear value prop + CTA, profile pic at 320×320, link-in-bio set, story highlights placeholders created
  • Connect to Meta Business Suite (needed for scheduling later)
  • Follow 20–30 accounts/day in target niche (mix: 5 mega-creators, 10 mid-tier, 10–15 peers)
  • Engage organically 20–30 min/day: like 30+ posts, leave 5+ thoughtful comments, save 5+ posts, watch Reels in-niche all the way through
  • Send 2–3 DMs/day to peer accounts (genuine, not spammy)
  • Do not post. Account is signaling to IG “here’s what I’m interested in” so the algorithm builds a content vector for you.

Week 2 — Stories + low-stakes posts

  • 1–2 stories/day (behind-the-scenes, polls, questions — engagement features, not just photo dumps)
  • 1 feed post mid-week (carousel preferred — IG currently boosts carousels)
  • Continue week-1 engagement levels
  • Add 5–10 niche-specific hashtags to a saved note (not 30 — current IG meta is fewer, more relevant)

Week 3 — Introduce Reels

  • 2 Reels this week, spaced 2–3 days apart
  • Keep hooks ≤2 seconds, total length 7–15s for first reels (high completion rate = algorithm trust)
  • Continue daily stories
  • 1 carousel mid-week

Week 4 — Full cadence

  • 3–5 Reels/week (Mon/Wed/Fri rhythm is the default)
  • Daily stories
  • 1 carousel/week
  • Start tracking: reach, profile visits, follow rate, save rate (saves matter more than likes now)

Niche selection (decide by end of week 1)

Strongest candidates from my existing interests (drawn from topics folders):

  1. AI tooling for creators / coders — combines coding + content. High demand, I genuinely use this stuff daily (Claude Code, video AI tools). Differentiated because most “AI” creators are surface-level.
  2. Music production workflowsmusic-production. Strong visual potential (DAW screens, gear). Saturated niche but a sub-angle (e.g., “AI in music production”, “bedroom producer to release”) could cut through.
  3. Travel + AI/productivity stack — leverages korea-japan-2026. Cross-niche tends to underperform unless one is dominant.
  4. Second-brain / knowledge systemsmocs meta-angle. Smaller TAM but extremely engaged niche (Obsidian/PKM crowd).

Selection criteria (force-rank against each):

  • Do I consume this content daily already? (if no → skip)
  • Can I generate 50 hook ideas in 30 min? (test the well)
  • Is there ≥1 mid-tier creator I’d benchmark against?
  • Does it have visual/short-form appeal?

Pick one primary + one supporting. Stacking two niches (e.g., “AI for music producers”) is more searchable and differentiated than a single broad one.

→ See niche-decision when written.

Consistency system (the actual hard part)

Posting fails on willpower, succeeds on systems. Lock these:

  • Batch day: one fixed day/week (e.g., Sunday) for recording + editing a full week of content
  • Capture system: ideas hit a single note (projects/instagram-warmup/hook-bank.md) the moment they appear — never trust memory
  • Template library: 3–5 reusable Reel formats (talking head + b-roll, screen recording + voiceover, “3 things I learned” carousel)
  • Schedule, don’t post live: use Meta Business Suite to queue the week on batch day; live-posting kills consistency
  • Public commitment: tell 2–3 people the cadence so social pressure backstops motivation
  • Streak tracking: mark each scheduled-and-posted day on a physical calendar — Seinfeld chain method

Open loops

  • Define the lens — one sentence operating principle, not bio (e.g., “build in public + live in motion”). Without this, lifestyle content plateaus at friends-and-family. This is the real first move. — by 2026-06-03
  • Keep _box.man_ handle. Rewrite name field (“Emre Selcuk | [lens]”) + bio + pfp + link in one session. Archive (don’t delete) old posts that don’t fit the new direction. — by 2026-05-30
  • Run niche-selection exercise (50-hook test for top 2 candidates) — by 2026-06-03
  • Optimize profile completely (bio, pic, link, highlights) — by 2026-05-30
  • Set up Meta Business Suite + connect Facebook page — by 2026-05-30
  • Start daily 20-min engagement habit — starting 2026-05-28
  • Build initial follow list (50 accounts in shortlisted niches) — by 2026-05-30
  • Create hook-bank.md in this project folder — by 2026-05-28
  • Decide batch-recording day + put on calendar — by 2026-06-01
  • First story posted (week 2) — by 2026-06-08
  • First Reel posted (week 3) — by 2026-06-15
  • Hit 14-day consecutive cadence streak — by 2026-06-28

Decisions log

  • 2026-05-27 — opened as project; chose 4-week warmup over jump-in approach because cold accounts that post hard on day 1 get suppressed
  • 2026-05-27 — committed to “pick one primary + one supporting niche” framing rather than chasing a single broad niche
  • 2026-05-27 — rebrand _box.man_ in place instead of starting a fresh account. Old account is uncurated personal posts — no persona to escape. Keeping it preserves account age, existing reach, and a friends/family follower base that gives premium completion-rate signals during warmup. Rename, archive (don’t delete) old posts, update profile, post a transition story.
  • 2026-05-27 — keep the _box.man_ handle. Renaming is aesthetic, not algorithmic. The name field is what’s searchable, not the handle. Energy spent on the rename was overhead; redirect it to the lens + name-field copy + first 9 grid posts. Can rename later if it becomes real friction.
